Spring morel mushroom hunters know exactly where to look to find Morchella esculenta, the beloved Yellow Morel.
Certain trees can host morel mushrooms every spring, and no morel-hosting tree is easier to spot than the American elm, which begins to shed its loose bark in sheets within a couple of years after the tree dies. Live elm trees are no good for finding morels, although people do look, but find nothing. Dead elm trees--that’s where to look.
Long live dead elms.
