Mushroom hunting season begins this month for the majority of mushroom hunters in Illinois. Although many edible species of fungi can be found year-around in Illinois, the morel mushroom is clearly the most popular and sought-after of all wild mushrooms in the state.
Morels pop up only once a year, and right now is the time. April is morel month in Illinois. A few are found in late March in southern Illinois. The last of the harvest disappears in northern Illinois in early May. Then it’s over.
There are three different varieties of true morel mushrooms found in Illinois. Known by common names such as the Black Morel, the Yellow Morel and the Half-Free Morel, these hollow, sponge-capped mushrooms are often found near certain tree species.
Which trees? Experience is a helpful teacher when it comes to morel mushroom hunting.
Morel hunters won’t tell you anything. If you want to learn how to find morels, first educate yourself, then hit the woods when the season is right. You’ll have a fine time, even if you don’t find any morels at first. A few morel hunters become frustrated or even angry when they don’t find morels. But remember that  there are many people in Illinois who would gladly collect no mushrooms at all if only they were able to go for a walk in the woods.
